In single-phase power, the supply voltage of the power supply changes simultaneously. Generally speaking, single-phase current is called "residential voltage" because it is primarily used in homes. Single phase connections are best suited for equipment up to 5 hp.

Heavy equipment such as industrial motors and other similar machinery cannot operate on single-phase power.
Small motors less than one kilowatt cannot be run on single-phase power because of the lack of initial torque required by the motor. Therefore, in order to make the motor run smoothly, an additional device is required called a motor starter.
