What are the different types of electricity meters?
The two main types of electricity meters are analog (electromechanical) meters and smart (automatic) meters. However, if you have micro-generation capacity installed, some jurisdictions require a third type of meter, called a two-way meter.
smart meter
Smart meters, on the other hand, use LEDs or LCDs and provide connectivity along with some instant features like two-way communication to keep your utility aware of outages.
Smart meters are used in conjunction with energy management systems, including software and equipment, to provide more reliable electrical service. They can show your home's energy usage, inform ways to reduce energy waste and save money, and allow remote adjustment of appliances like thermostats.

analog meter
Of course, analog gauges have old-fashioned displays that don't offer connectivity or smart features. They use electromagnetic induction to measure the energy passing through them and display numbers on a clock-like scale.
Two-way meter
Bidirectional meters measure current flow in both directions. These types of meters are available for sites/homes where solar, wind, biomass or other renewable fuel generators are installed in parallel with their primary utility's power system.
When generating electricity to supplement the electricity you get from your local power company, you need a way to calculate the energy from your suppliers, both the kilowatts provided and the electricity you generate yourself. Sometimes, you may generate excess energy, which is not a bad thing because you can export the excess power to the local grid for money or other tax credits.
To get a two-way meter, submit a grid connection application to your electricity provider, who will set up a new two-way meter if you meet certain criteria.
